What does a pain management specialist do?
A pain management specialist is a physician with special training in evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of all different types of pain.
Pain is actually a wide spectrum of disorders including acute pain, chronic pain and cancer pain and sometimes a combination of these.
A pain management specialist’s training include a curriculum that spreads over many medical specialties and capabilities that allow the best deal and solving of acute and chronic pain states.
IASP( International Association for the Study of Pain ) has published the curriculum of training in Pain medicine. The Greek Pain Medicine Association has published in 2005 the Greek edition of this curriculum based on the third international edition. The 2017 edition is the base of education for Athens’ National Kapodistrian Univercity’s 2years’ Postgraduate Master Training in Algology (Pain Medicine).
The experience of pain is defined by the IASP as
“An unpleasant aesthetic and emotional experience associated with, or similar to, associated with actual or potential tissue damage”
and expands by adding six key points.
- Pain is always a personal experience influenced to varying degrees by biological, psychological and social factors.
- Pain and nociception are different phenomena. The activity of sensory neurons alone is not sufficient to justify pain.
- Through their life experiences, individuals learn the meaning of pain.
- A person’s report of an experience as pain should be respected.
- Although pain usually serves an adaptive role, it can have adverse effects on functioning and social and psychological well-being.
- Verbal description is only one of many behaviors that express pain, and the inability to communicate does not negate the possibility that a human or nonhuman being experiences pain.
