Many patients ask us what prolotherapy and PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) are.
Prolotherapy is a treatment that helps the body strengthen and “repair” injured tissues, such as ligaments, tendons or joints, on its own.
In simple terms, the doctor makes small injections into the areas where you are hurting, using a special liquid (usually a dextrose solution or another natural ingredient). This liquid “wakes up” your body and makes it send more blood and nutrients to the area, so that healing can begin. Think of it as saying to your body: “Come on, I need help here!”
It is a natural, drug-free method that is done to reduce pain and strengthen the area. However, patience is required, because more than one session may be needed.
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is a treatment that uses the patient’s own blood to help the body heal faster.
How it works:
- We take a little blood, like when we do an exam.
- We put it in a special machine that separates it, so that we can get the part of the blood that is rich in platelets.
- We put this rich fluid (PRP) back into the body, to the point that needs treatment (e.g. in the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, hair or skin).
Platelets have “healing powers” because they contain substances that help tissues to renew and recover. It is a natural treatment, because we use something that is already in our body!
Prolotherapy and PRP applications are applied at our center under ultrasound guidance in a safe and pleasant environment.
